Adding a global focus to United States history course places the nation within, not outside and apart from, the larger structural patterns that have taken place around the world. In this workshop we practice placing United States history into a “big picture” context as we explore major world developments—from the age of colonial conquest to globalization—that have profoundly shaped our historical past and continue to shape our future. Within this more expansive framework we can fit in our existing knowledge and adapt it to our present curriculum. In keeping with national standards, we also explore practical classroom strategies to help our students broaden their global perspective.
