United States History I

United States History I (to 1877) begins with the habitation of Native Americans in the area now considered the United States. The course continues with European colonization of the area and the move towards establishment of an independent nation. Along with the heated debates about the political form the new nation adopts and the explosive issue of slavery, this course explores the expansion and intensification of a capitalist economy linked to both domestic and world markets. The nation continues its expansionist thrust by acquiring -- through war, theft, and purchase -- vast new territories. Ideological, political, and economic differences between the North and South result in a ghastly Civil War tearing apart the fragile union. Although the North prevails in keeping the nation unified, it is at a tremendous cost. The course ends with the North’s Reconstruction efforts to mend a badly wounded nation.
